Your Website Checklist
Please review the following information prior to completing the answer form at the end of this page. This is extremely important, as it helps us to establish a collaborative relationship that makes your website something you’re proud to show the world:
The Prep Work:
Is there a website that you’d like to emulate? If so, give me the URL (web address) so I can look at it. If you don’t have any ideas or if you are totally open to whatever we can create together, then I will put together an initial layout for you to review, and then we can tweak it based on further conversations.
What do you want to do with your website? Your website can simply be an online billboard with a way for prospects and customers to get in touch with you, or you can turn it into money making machine. The choice is yours. Do want to sell products or services? Do you want to offer freebies that people can download? Do you want people to book appointments with you? Do you want to offer subscriptions and restrict some or all your site content to paying members? Think about the functionality of your site and what you want visitors to be able to do on it.
Who is your target audience? Be clear on who you want to speak to and attract NOW. It’s okay if that changes later, but getting clear on who your audience is right now will also help you get clear on your message.
What is the “short introduction” for your Landing Page? In other words, if you had only 30 to 60 seconds to tell someone what you do, what would you say? Be clear, centered, and authentic in your message. Do your best to answer the following questions: 1) Who are you? 2) What do you do? 3) How do you do this? and 4) What makes you unique or special?
Ideally, if you have a video that does your introduction for you, that works best. But if you’re just starting out, don’t worry! Just remember that when you’re writing your intro, you have a very short time to get your visitor’s attention. You can give site visitors more detail further down on the page and elsewhere on the site, but the first thing they see should grab and keep their attention.
Do you have a color scheme you want to use? If you already have a color scheme picked out, great. If not, I’m happy to offer suggestions based on what I know about you and our conversations. I can help you understand the basics of color psychology, but ultimately the goal is to make the site a reflection of YOU and your personality.
Speaking of which, are there any fonts you’d like to use? If you have specific ideas or suggestions, that’s great – but if you don’t, that’s okay. I can work with you on fonts the same as with colors.
Write your bio. If I’m building a one-page site, then all you need is a short bio. If you have more complex website with multiple pages, I typically recommend writing 2 bios; a short bio for your landing page and a long bio for the actual ABOUT ME page.
When writing your bio, share your passion by telling your visitors why you’re the perfect person to give them what they want, and give them a reason to want to work with you. Use wording that creates vivid imagery, that helps your visitors “see” and “feel” what they want, and then “see” and “feel” how you offer the solution. Write as if you’re having a conversation with your best friend. The more natural it sounds to you, the more natural you will come across to your audience.
Get some testimonials from people you’ve already worked with. Or, if you’re just starting out, get testimonials from people who know you, your passions, and your talents. That will provide you with a great starting point and build on your reputation as an expert.
I will be building your site using WordPress. A significant number of the world’s websites are built using WordPress, which has become the standard for content management and web design. Here is what I will need to get your site up and running:
Buy a domain name. Domain names are cheap, so buy one or many if that’s what you feel like doing. I typically buy my domains through GoDaddy because that gives me a single repository for all of my domains and I can easily redirect them to different hosting sites as needed. If you get your domain through GoDaddy, please send me your GoDaddy login info so I can point your domain to your hosting site. If you buy your domain through someone else, I will still need your login credentials for the same reason.
Get a website hosting account. This is different from buying a domain name. Your domain name is your web address, or your “identity” on the web. It’s how people find you (i.e. – www.AppioHunter.com). A hosting service is where you will store all the files, templates, plugins, etc. that make your website work.
Most my clients (myself included) use BlueHost since they are optimized for WordPress. GoDaddy also offers a hosting service for WordPress, so you can check them out as well, but my experience has been that GoDaddy’s strength is with domain registration, not web hosting.
While all hosting sites charge monthly fees, you can get super good rates if you prepay for a full year or more. If you can afford the “prepay” option, I recommend that. Or, you can just “pay as you go” and opt for a prepaid plan later.
Once you get your web hosting account, I will need your login credentials so I can do the necessary background work to get your site up and running.
Social media links. Every website has to be connected to social media nowadays. That’s just the way things work if you want people to find you. I will need links to ALL your social media pages to set up the social media “Like” and “Follow” buttons.
High-quality photos of you. Ideally, I’d love to get 3 high-quality RECENT photos of you that I can display on your website. 1 will go on the home page, 1 will go on your ABOUT ME page, and the third I’ll keep in reserve. If you have only 1 photo, that’s fine. If you have a bunch, great! We’ll find a place for them!
Artwork. Do you have a logo and other artwork you want to use? If you do, you will be able to upload it from the answer form. If you don’t have anything, that’s okay. We can always add logos later, and I can get free pictures from a variety of resources.
On the subject of artwork… I do my best to use pictures, clipart, and video that are part of the public domain (translation – free to use for any purpose). However, I sometimes (rarely) run across situations where, due to a specific request, I may have to buy the rights to a picture. I use Shutterstock as my primary source of images, and they bill me $10 per picture. If that happens, be aware that I will pass that cost onto you. That said, I don’t anticipate having to use Shutterstock unless we just can’t find a free image that fits what we want to do.
Decide on what third-party services you’d like to integrate into your site (if any). If your goal is to turn your website into a revenue generator, you’ll want to use certain third-party services to capture visitor data. These are services like MailChimp, Awebber, Constant Contact, Survey Monkey, or Google Analytics (which is really important if you plan to do your own marketing or hire a marketing firm to promote your business).
While most third-party services are free to sign up, all of them charge you to take advantage of their more feature-rich services – so just be aware of that.
